Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of post-traumatic stress disorder, which is the most common psychiatric disorder to be triggered after floods, and to determine the factors related to this frequency in the regions affected by the flood disaster in the Besikduzu district of the Trabzon province. Method: 401 people participated in this cross-sectional study. In the collection of data, a questionnaire was used which included questions about participants' sociodemographic characteristics, levels of exposure to flooding events and mental health statuses. The Traumatic Stress Symptom Checklist was used to measure post-traumatic stress disorder. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used. Results: 5.0% of the participants had a high score on the Traumatic Stress Symptom Checklist. It was determined that being a woman (p=0.018), drifting in flood (p=0.031), experiencing physical trauma during flood (p=0.046), having experienced flood before (p=0.001), worsening in the economic situation after the flood (p=0.028), having damage to farmland (p=0.043), having a psychiatric disorder before the flood (p<0.001) and using psychiatric drugs before the flood (p<0.001) are associated with high scale score. Conclusion: It should not be forgotten that post-traumatic stress disorder can be seen after floods and should be screened for at risk groups.
