Abstract

Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935) was one of the founders of Armenian national music and is known for his compilation works on this scope. Between 1896 and 1899, he took lessons in philosophy and music at Friedrich Wilhelm University and Richard Schmidt’s private conservatory in Berlin, and during this education, he experimented with musical works in various genres and forms. Lokmagözyan, who has published some of these works –and some of which are unfinished– in the book “Komitas: Works in German”, states that not all of the compositions presented have high musical value, but he also attributes a special emphasis to the choral piece titled An den Wassern zu Babel in this context. The fact that Komitas’ aforementioned work (Psalm 137: By the Rivers of Babylon), which was scrutinized in this direction, has a more intense content than many of his other works written in Western-style due to the duration, tonal areas, and extra-musical references, brought the idea of shedding light on Komitas’ “composer identity” through this composition. In this study, contentform analysis was implemented on the composition of Psalm 137, written by the composer for choir, and soloists with piano accompaniment. In line with the analysis, some details about the composer’s approach that puts music at the disposal of the scripture have been revealed
