Abstract

Wall paintings which became widespread in the late period of the Ottoman Empire are seen in all regions of the state, especially in Istanbul. It has been observed that the wall paintings which have become an important element of architecture, were made according to the local taste and the individual examples display some diverse thematic and stylistic features. Being an important decorative practice, murals and painted decorations of the buildings in the Balkans, Anatolia and the Middle East reflect the artistic taste of the period. The Hadum Mosque in Gjakova, Kosovo includes wall paintings and painted decorations that are among the most important examples of its kind both in the Balkans and in the Ottoman Empire in general. The study covers the wall paintings and painted decorations of the Hadum Mosque. The aim of the study is to classify the wall paintings and painted decorations in the building according to their subjects. In addition, the buildings and cities depicted on the walls will be investigated in comparison with the visual documents to understand whether these illustrations match with the existing buildings and cities. One of the major problematics of wall paintings is to determine the identity of the artist(s). Many artists practicing this art are unknown and their works remain anonymous. Thus, in this essay, the styles of the wall paintings and painted decorations of the Hadum Mosque will be discussed in comparison with other examples in the region to identify the artists or the atelier/artistic school to which they were affiliated.
