Abstract
Dystopia, a sub-genre of Speculative Fiction, is rarely seen in Turkish literature. Generally, dystopias are fictions based on fears, phobias concerning the future. Essentially, these works bring to the fore the warning that “it will become worse if things continue to be this way.” Nevertheless, the “possible” dystopia mentioned here is different from science fiction and fantasy, and it is used to describe a Kafkaesque bureaucratic dystopia. The term “possible” refers to a dystopic theme that the communities experienced before. This dystopic set up is emphasized by the motto “it happened this way before; it will happen again, if things continue to be so.”The most notable aspect that differentiates Şehrin Kuleleri (Towers of the City) from dystopian genre is the parodic use of the dystopian theme. The layers of the writer, the narrator and the reader construct a complicated structure within the text, and it is fictionalized through a story that is free from an exact pattern. The process of the construction of the plot becoming a part of the fiction; the transformation of the text into a ground of commucation between the reader and the writer/the narrator; the playful nature of the whole text makes this work distinctive. The aim of this study is to examine Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s novel Şehrin Kuleleri (Towers of the City) both within the context of the dystopian genre and within the line of the concepts of "ludism" and "traditional narrator," "metafiction."
