Abstract
The electroless Ni-B coating with the high boron content was obtained in the previously optimized bath and the effect of the designed heat treatment (at 450°C for 1 hr) on the coating microstructure, corrosion resistance and hardness was investigated. It was observed that the Ni-B electroless coating was mainly amorphous in the as-deposited condition. Upon heat treatment, the coating structure crystallized along with the formation of Ni3B and Ni2B phases. After heat treatment the corrosion resistance of the coating was observed to reduce. This reduction in the corrosion resistance was attributed to the destruction of the amorphous structure and appearance of the structural defects. The hardness of the coating increased significantly with the heat treatment. While the micro-hardness of the as-deposited coating was 704 VHN100, that of the heat-treated coating was 1100 VHN100. The phase transformation (the formation of Ni-B phases) was thought as the main reason for the improvement in the hardness. Accompanied micro-crack formation, however, was also considered to have contribution to the hardness improvement with the applied heat treatment.
