Abstract

Ekşi Höyük, one of the important archaeological sites in the Çivril Plain, is in the south of Çivril Plain and east of Çal district (Denizli). Paleogeographical and geoarchaeological studies were conducted to determine natural environment changes in Ekşi Höyük. In this context, a total of 16 drillings were performed, 10 on the mound and 6 in the area west of the mound. The sedimentological and paleontological analysis results of sediment samples taken from boreholes were combined with field observations carried out in the field, and the paleogeography-geoarchaeological features of Ekşi Höyük and its immediate surroundings were revealed. The first settlement in the Neolithic Age began directly on the surface of the Neogene (Pliocene) bedrock and the thickness of the cultural layer reaches up to 2 meters in the center of the mound. In the Ekşi-2018-13 and Ekşi-2018-16 core drillings, ceramic and chert/artifact (obsidian?) fragments were found. In the Neolithic Age when the settlement started, it was understood that an old entrenched meander of the Büyük Menderes river was located to the west of the mound.
