Abstract
The species belonging to the genus Sorbus sp. which is generally known as 'Rowan berry' among the people, are widely distributed in our country as well as in the world. In addition to its traditional use such as fruit juice, jam and tea, it is also used as a raw material for pharmaceuticals in terms of phenolic substances, flavonoids, tannins and fatty acids. Fruit phytochemicals, especially phenolic compounds, show a wide biodiversity such as anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory and cell-regulating effects. It has been observed that various parts of S. domestica have high nutritional value as they contain significant amounts of proteins, vitamins and minerals, S. aucuparia contains caffeic and ferulic acid pseudodepsids, proanthocyanidins and flavonols, fruits of S. torminalis show antioxidant and antiacetylcholinesterase activity. The aim of this review is to indicate the botanical characteristics of some species belonging to the genus Sorbus sp. in general and to show the phytochemical content analyzes as well as to guide the studies to be done.
