Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the success of the senior high students and their thinking levels according to Van Hiele Geometric Thinking Test. In this descriptive study, the relationship between the success of the students and their thinking levels were also explored. The general population of the study was year 11 students in İzmir and the target population of the study was year 11 students in Karabağlar province. The participants of the study were selected with convenient sampling strategy. In total 50 senior high school students of whom % 60 (n=30) girls and % 40 (n=20) boys took place in the study. The data collection instrument was “Van Hiele Geometrical Test” which was developed by Usiskin (1982) in order to determine the participant students’ thinking levels. This instrument was later translated into Turkish, adapted and its validity and reliability tests were carried out by Duatepe (2000). The Chronbach Alpha reliability scores for first, second and third levels were calculated as 0.82, 0.51 and 0.70, respectively (Duatepe, 2004). The results of the Van Hiele Geometrical Test consisted of 25 questions which included 5 questions for each level. The results of the Van Hiele Geometrical Test that the participants were subjected to and the participants’ grades were analyzed with the help of SPSS. Means, standard deviations, frequencies, percentages and ANOVA test were employed. The significance level was 0,05. The findings of the study revealed that the most of the participants were in the first level (61 %), and 26 % were in the second while 8 % were in the third level. 50 % of the boys were in the first level while 30 % were in the second and 20 % were in the third level. 76,6 % of the girls were in the first level, 23,4 % were in the second level yet there were no girl participant that reached the third level. The findings also showed that there were no significant relationship between the participants’ grades and their Van Hiele Geometrical Test scores. However, the findings indicated that the partipants’ scores and their Van Hiele Test sores showed significant results regarding gender.
