Abstract

Ottoman silk production started with the import of silk made from Iran. The cocoons produced in Iran's areas such as Şirvan and Mazenderanwere generally brought to be raw. The most important issue to be examined in this regard is the starting time of the production of silk in the country and the volume of production. It is interesting not to be questioned. Ipek was used as a strategic commodity in the Ottoman- Safavid relations. This situation caused deep shocks on the Silk Road from the 1650s onwards. It should be considered that the Ottoman manufacturers took the necessary measures in the face of this economic shock caused by political events. The research is done in two stages. In the first stage, the reasons of this problem are explained. Then, we focused on Amasya, one of the most important silk producing cities. In the Ottoman archival documents, the first information proving Amasya silk production is given in an archive document dated 1712. Amasya has been studied as a model for other silk producing cities. The registers belonging to the city were examined in ten years periods between 1770-1880. The results were compared with other periods. The study conducted before the year of 1700 in the region of Amasya silk production, though a little has revealed. However, this period has not yet been sufficiently clarified. However, after 1700s, it became clear. It is seen that the number and value of mulberry vineyards, which were made from silk during the 1750s, have been increasing day by day. In the second part of the study, the estimation of the size of the Ottoman silk production was made by using the example of Amasya city. Because it has become a problem. Amasya silkiness in the case of the subject of being opened in other silk-producing cities in the case of the story of the Ottoman silkwashing will be revealed.
