Abstract
Earthquakes took place during historical and instrumental period in our country, have showed that Turkey is in seismically active and earthquake hazardous risk zones. It is clear that the soil-effect is one of the most important factors that need to be investigated carefully during the building design after these earthquakes. But, there are many other reasons that cause to collapse of a building except soil-effect. These can be classified as structure quality, soil-structural interaction, static-dynamic properties of the soil and structural and dynamic behavior of the soil and structural during the earthquake. As known, at risky structure analysis, one of the first conditions of obtaining information that belong structure, determines the concrete compressive strength. The concrete compressive strength can be determined by destructive-nondestructive methods. In this study, the concrete compressive strengths have been obtained with nondestructive geophysical methods and both in-situ Schmidt test hammer and in laboratory uniaxial compression test applied to samples taken from the same places as destructive methods that performed in a total of 128 buildings in 10 districts in Izmir. The concrete compressive strength values obtained from destructive and nondestructive methods have been compared. As a result of all these studies; the place, the importance, and solution proposals of the geophysical methods in the structure risk investigation has been discussed and, empirical relationships towards in-situ concrete strength have been presented. Concrete compressive strength from in-situ P wave velocity in these relationships can be estimated with a ±2MPa error. Using of P-wave velocity in determining of concrete strength of building will provide both time and spatial information.
