Abstract

The aim of this study is to adapt the Social-Emotional and Character Development Scale developed by Ji et al. (2013) into Turkish culture in order to determine the social-emotional and character development of children between the ages of 8-12. In this study, data was collected from two different groups as elementary and secondary school students. The first sample group of the study consists of 458 elementary school students studying in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades in three different elementary schools in the central district of a province of Southeastern Anatolia. The second sample group of the study consisted of 340 secondary school students studying in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades in two different elementary schools in the same region and province. The construct validity of the scale was tested by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and the criterion related validity was examined. For both study groups, it was observed that the model was significant and produced good fit values. The criterion related validity of the scale was examined using the Perceived Social Competence Scale. Accordingly, in both study groups, the sub-dimensions and total score of the Social-Emotional and Character Development Scale were found to have a moderate and high significant relationship with the Perceived Social Competence Scale (Sarıçam et al., 2013). In the reliability study of the scale, Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient for all SDAGO was found to be sufficient in both studies. The findings of the study were discussed and discussed and some suggestions were made according to the results. As a conclusion, it was determined that the structure of SDAGO scale is a valid and reliable measurement instrument suitable for Turkish culture.
