Abstract

Purpose: This study was planned to investigate the effect of different physical therapy on pain, mental status, and quality of life on patients with cervical myofascial pain syndrome (MPS). Methods: Sixty patients with MPS randomly were divided into 3 groups (treatment, exercise, control). Patients’ demographic information, autonomic and other symptoms associated with MPS were recorded. The treatment group hotpack, ultrasound and exercise training for 2 weeks, 5 days a week, the exercise group only exercise training and the control group a 2 week rest was given. In the study, pain, depression, activity limitations and quality of life were assessed respectively by Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the group of questions with 10 items and Nottingham Health Profile (NHP). Results: In the study autonomic and other symptoms associated with MPS found no difference between the groups (p>0.05). All parameters of SF-MPQ significantly reduced compared to baseline in treatment group (p<0.05). BDI values significantly reduced in treatment and control group (p<0.05). Pain sub-parameter of quality of life reduced in treatment group, (p<0.05), in sleep and physical mobility significantly improved in exercise group (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was determined that exercise treatment with electrotherapy treatment was more effective than exercise only on pain, depression and quality of life in MPS in this study.
