Abstract
Having elapsed over one hundred and twenty years since its invention, the art of moving pictures, including the documentaries which it has given the first examples of has been thriving by seeking for the truth, to create a projection of real life. In this period, fully contrasted to the criticisms and theories that it drew away from its aesthetic stance as it came closer to reality, cinema by continuously renewing itself, has opened its doors to every innovation like sound, colour and three dimension without compromising from its aesthetic posture in spite of all these. Although, cinema is likened to a dream factory, a good many cinematographer and theorists like Andre Bazin, Sergei Eisenstein, Dziga Vertov point out that the approach of cinema to reality brought an extra aesthetic value to this brunch of art. Cinema like many other art forms imitates nature and real life. Film makers and theorists thought that cinema influenced the spectator to the extent that it approached reality. So they handled reality in distinct ways and contents in their studies and films they shot. For example, while Bazin thought that reality could be provided through depth of field, Kuleshov stressed the significance of montage with respect to reality. Despite all these varieties, their points in common was still that cinema was not merely a dream factory. The dimensions of the relationship that cinema established with reality can be understood by looking at the emerging genres in the field of cinema. In this context, the genres like “independent cinema, politic cinema, third cinema” emerged which based highly on reality. As for this study, the relationship that cinema established with reality was discussed in terms of the concepts of third cinema and “The Herd” movie of Yılmaz Güney. In the analysis of the film that was being discussed in the study, semiology and content analysis method were being utilised.
