Babası Harput eşrafından Mehmet Şemseddin Bey, annesi Nâdire Hanım’dır. İlk ve ortaokul tahsilini Elazığ’da, lise öğrenimini de Malatya’da tamamlamıştır. 1941 yılında başladığı Ankara Üniversitesi Dil ve Tarih-Coğrafya Fakültesi Tarih Bölümü’nden 1945 yılında mezun olmuştur. Prof. Dr. Bahaeddin Ögel aynı yıl Erzurum Lisesi’ne Tarih Öğretmeni olarak tayin edilmiştir.
