Abstract

This research was carried out to determine the volatile oil content and compounds at different harvesting stages of Origanum minutiflorum O. Schwarz et. P. H. Davis, which is an endemic species to Western Mediterranean flora and especially collected wild in Sütçüler region of Isparta province in Turkey. The aerial parts of the plants were collected at seven different stages as follows: early budding, late budding, early flowering, full flowering, late flowering, seed formation, and seed maturation. After leaves were dried at shade on the drying rack, the volatile oil contents were detected by hydro-Clevenger apparatus, and the volatile oil compounds were analyzed by GC/MS. From the first harvesting stage to the last harvesting stage, the leaf rate decreased from 76.9% to 64.2%, while the stem ratio increased from 23.1% to 35.8%. Although the highest volatile oil content was 3.0% in the plants harvested at full flowering stage, the lowest content was 1.6% in the plants harvested at the seed maturation stage. The rate of carvacrol, the main compound of the volatile oil, varied considerably with respect to harvest stages and was highest at the end of budding (82.78%) and lowest at seed maturation (50.83%).
