Abstract
Objective: Objective of the research was to determine obesity frequency in primary school children. Material and Method: The cross - sectional study was conducted with 1526 students in a primary school between October 2016 and May 2017. The data were collected with the student follow-up form. Findings: The mean age of the children was 8.35 ± 1.28, 50.2 % was female and 5.2% was Syrian. 7.7% of children were overweight and 8.8% were obese. There was no significant difference between students' being overweight and obese in terms of gender and different nationality (p> 0.05). The prevalence of overweight / obesity increased significantly as the age and class levels of the children increased (x2 = 8.432, p = 0.015; x2 = 9.520, p = 0.023). There was no significant difference between the duration of daily activity and the incidence of overweight / obesity (p> 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the study showed that the prevalence of overweight / obese was common in primary school children and this rate increased with age. It is extremely important to diagnose obesity at the earliest period and to conduct intervention. The school environment is suitable for the realization of these interventions and it is recommended to include interventions to improve screening, healthy nutrition and physical activity in school health services based on primary protection.
