Abstract
This study examines the impacts of variables indicating the socio-economic and cultural statuses of the students in the countries that participated 2012 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) organized by OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), and their impact on the achievements in examinations. Study was implemented in two stages. At the first stage, countries were classified by multi-dimensional scaling method and in accordance with the variables indicating the students' socio-economic and cultural statuses. As a result of analysis, the socio-economic and cultural differences of students from sixty-two out of sixty-five countries participated to 2012 assessment were represented in a three dimensional space. In the second stage, the success of students in PISA 2012 mathematics, reading and sciences examinations were transformed into a binary variable by taking OECD average as a base, and by using the logistic regression analysis, it has been determined that all three dimensions representing the socio-economic and cultural statuses of students had statistically significant impact on the success of students.
