Abstract
AbstractOne of the distinctive features the Church of the East, or the Nestorian Church as it is commonly known, continued its existence completely outside the borders of the Roman Empire under non-Christian governments in the Parthian/Sassanid and later Muslim geography. Although this church is constantly under the control of foreigners, it has maintained its tendency to expand continuously from the moment it appeared on the stage of history. However, as the Mongol invasion began to affect the Islamic world in the XIII and XIV centuries, this process also constituted a very critical threshold for the Church of the East. While Church of the East continued its expansion tendency in the early stages of the Mongol rule, it soon lost all its gains and found itself on the brink of great chaos. Studies on this subject agree that Church of the East started a period of disintegration and decline during the Mongols and Timurids period. However, the effect of the attitude of Church of the East during the Mongol invasion and especially during the Ilkhanids period on the emergence of such a destructive result for the church was not mentioned. This study aims to deal with the attitude Church of the East during the Mongol invasion and the effect of this attitude on the fate of the church from a new perspective. In addition, it aims to make understandable the situation of the Church of the East under the rule of the Mongols/Ilkhanids (1258-1335) and the reasons that led the church to the decline and dissolution process. In the study, the sources Church of the Eastern of the period and other Christian and Muslim sources were utilized. Keywords: The Church of the East, Nestorians, Mongols, Ilkhanids, Muslims.
