Abstract
Dust is one of the most important problem, affecting severely safety and health of theworkers underground. Dust mainly occurs due to the intensive use of mechanisation inmining. Coal dusts, occurring during production and transportation processes inunderground can travel through the whole mine and be deposited on the surfaces ofgalleries and on the support systems. In surface mines, on the other hand, the dustsgenerated can be dispersed all around and easily affect the vicinity of the mine. In theplaning stage of dust control for mining operations, all the dust sources should beinvestigated in details and high-level, moderate and low-level dust sources should bedetermined. Each dust sources should then be investigated for the parameters such as dustconcentration level and the exposure time of mine personnel to these concentration levels. In this paper, dust sources of underground and surface mines are explained and themeasures that should be taken in combating dust problem are summarised.
