Abstract
This article provides information about the life and works of Abdurrahman Sâmî Saruhânî Efendi, a sheikh of the KhalwatiyyahUshshaqiyyah Sufi order, and a transcribed copy of his work “Nâme-i Muharram”, supplemented with comments and explanations. Furthermore, the events of the Battle of Karbala, the main subject of his work, are summarily recounted. Information on special elegiac literary forms of Islamic literature associated with the Karbala incident – marthiyah, maqtal, and muharramiyyah – is also provided. Appropriately, the mourning (matam) rituals observed every year during the holy month of Muharram are also mentioned. Abdurrahman Sâmî Efendi was an Islamic scholar and Sufi who lived during the late 19th century and the early 20th century. He is noteworthy as one of the last 20th century representatives of the tradition of writing elegiac poems about the Karbala incident. Sâmî Efendi, a Sunni Islamic scholar and Sûfî penned his Karbala elegy, Nâme-i Muharrem, to show his love for the prophet’s grandson Husayn (pbuh) and sorrow for his martyrdom at the hands of Yazid’s army in Karbala. So this work (Nâme-i Muharrem) is important among the Sunni Sufi orders as a sign of the love and respect harbored for the Prophet’s family and the sensitivity and emotionality of the Karbala incident.
