Abstract

Aim: The aim of present study was to determine the prevalence of the styloid process type in the Turkish Cypriot population on panoramic radiography and to evaluate Eagle syndrome.Materials and Method: Panoramic images of a total of 3000 patients (1500 males, 1500 females) between the ages of 18-87 (mean age 32.6) who referred to our clinic for various reasons were retrospectively evaluated. The classification was made by dividing patients with calcification into 7 subgroups according to the length of the styloid process (SP) and into 3 subgroups in accordance with the pattern of the elongation of the styloid process as an elon-gated styloid process (type I), pseudoarticular styloid process (type II) and segmented styloid process III). The relationship between age, gender and SP types was determined. Results: Elongated styloid process was detected in a total of 1600 patients (789 males, 811 females) in all radiographs examined, 3 cases (2 males, 1 female) of them were symptomatic and diagnosed with Eagle syndrome. Type 2 was the most common styloid process type with an incidence of 41.7%, and the least common type was Type 5 with an incidence of 1.9%. Elongated SP prevalence was found to be 53.3% in our study group. No significant difference was found between male and female patients in terms of styloid process types. (p> 0.05)Conclusion: Styloid calcification increases with age, but only 3 patients with calcification showed symptoms and Eagle syndrome was diagnosed.
