BAYES TEOREMİ BAĞLAMINDA OLASILIKÇI BAYES EPİSTEMOLOJİSİNİN KAPSAMI ÜZERİNE BİR İNCELEME

EXAMINATION OF BAYESIAN PROBABILITY EPISTEMOLOGY WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF BAYES’ THEOREM

Özet

Bu makalede, epistemolojide matematik ve istatistiksel bir yaklaşımı temele alan ve ülkemizde pek bir çalışma zemini bulamamış olan Olasılıkçı Bayes epistemolojisinin yeri üzerinde durulacaktır. Bunun için de öncelikle Bayes teoremi ve Bayes epistemolojisi arasındaki ilişki kurulacaktır. Bayes teoremi, koşullu olasılıkları hesaplayan matematiksel, istatistiksel bir yöntemdir. Bir olayın gerçekleşmiş olmasının başka bir olayın gerçekleşme olasılığına etkisi Bayes teoreminin temelini oluşturmaktadır. Bayes teoremini temele alan Bayes epistemolojisi ise; farklı olanakları ön görmeyi, önceden kestirmeyi ve inançların epistemik seviyesini yükseltmeyi amaçlar. Olasılıkçı Bayes epistemolojisi şans unsurunu merkeze alan bir hipotezi eleme anlayışı yerine iki hipotezi karşılaştırma üzerine odaklanır. Gettier problemine alternatif bir çözüm olarak Bayesçi epistemoloji, epistemik özneyi olasılık kuralları çerçevesinde doğru seçeneğe yönlendirmesi ve gerekçelendirmeye katkı yapması ile de önem arz etmektedir. Sonuç olarak makalede, Bayes epistemolojisinin kapsamını ve çağdaş epistemoloji ile özellikle de Gettier problemi ve bu probleme ilişkin alternatif yaklaşımlar arasındaki yerini ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır.

Abstract

This article focuses on Bayesian probability epistemology which is grounded on mathematical and statistical approach epistemologically and its place in our country as it is not studied widely. For this purpose, first a relationship between the Bayes theorem and the Bayesian epistemology. Bayes theorem is a mathematical and statistical method that calculates conditional probabilities. The foundation of Bayes theorem is grounded in the impact of the occurrence of an incident on an other incident’s probability of occurrence. Bayes epistemology which is based on Bayes theorem aims to increase the prediction of different probabilities and the epistemic level of beliefs. The epistemology of Bayesian probability focuses on comparing two hypotheses rather than eliminating one hypothesis that centers the element of luck. As an alternative solution to Gettier problem, Bayesian epistemology is important as it contributes to causality and provides direction for the epistemic subject towards the right option with in the rules of probability. The purpose of this article is to reveal the concept of Bayesian epistemology and its place among contemporary epistemology, particularly Gettier problem and alternative approaches related to this problem.
