Abstract

Accurate and consistent estimates of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) in irrigated agriculture are important for planning and managing irrigation and water resources and for using water resources efficiently. The most common procedure for estimating ETc is to adjust the reference evapotranspiration (ETo) values with the crop coefficient (Kc). This approach calculates ETo for a standard surface using reference parameters and agro-meteorological data. Then, it applies appropriate empirical crop coefficients for obtaining ETc. FAO Penman- Monteith (FAO-PM) method was recommended as the standard method to compute ETo from meteorological data. The meteorological data used to calculate evapotranspiration and/or reference evapotranspiration is obtained from conventional (synoptic) and automatic stations. Because of the differences in the instruments and methods used in conventional and automatic stations, the data from these stations is also different. Therefore, this research compares the ETo values determined by using temperature and relative humidity data from the synoptic station and the automatic station. The (t) test, root mean squared error (RMSE) and relative error (%E) were used as comparison criteria. It is understood that the daily ETo values obtained from two different stations are significantly different according to the (t) test (p<0.05) and the RMSE value (0.23 mm d-1) is below the acceptable error limit and the % E value is 9.42%. The average % E value for the monthly ETo values was 9.39% and the average % E value for the irrigation season was 4.39%. The ETo value obtained from the automatic station during the irrigation season was 25.9 mm less than the value obtained from the synoptic station. For this reason, it has been understood that the use of ETo value obtained from automatic station will be important for saving water.
