Abstract

Sociology is a scientific discipline of modern times. Society and social events which constitutes the subject of sociology, however, are facts that have existed since the beginning of human history. Immigration is an old fact of this history just like other social facts, of which immigration is its part. Since the end of the 19th century, many studies were conducted and various theories were developed on the immigration. These theories have contributed to our understanding the phenomenon of immigration and have provided various solutions about the problems that immigration causes. These theories, however, deal with the question of immigration as if it is a modern phenomenon, and they aim to provide solutions about its challenges and problems. The prophets of the monotheistic religions and the first generation of their followers constitute a major category with respect to the studies of immigration and any reductive attempt to explain this multifaceted phenomenon within the context of a specific immigration theory would fail. Even though the immigration of the prophets and their followers may have some similarities with other kinds of immigrations, due to the sacred ideas and ideals that motivated them and also due to the consequences these immigrations that shaped the course of human history, they are apt to be conceived as highly original and specific categories. This study first examines the classical theories of immigration and then highlights the main points of the immigration of the prophets in monotheistic religions and that of their followers, an aspect which is ignored in contemporary studies.
