Evaluation of sensitivity, isolation time and cost of mycofast in detecting Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum

Servikal örneklerden Mycoplasma hominis ve Ureaplasma urealyticum saptanmasında konvansiyonel yöntemler ile Mycofast (International Mycoplasma, Signes, France) ticari test kiti, saptama yeteneği ve süresi ile maliyet analizi parametreleri baz alınarak karşılaştırılmıştır. Konvansiyonel besiyerleri olarak; M. hominis izolasyonu için Mycoplasma Broth Base (M broth) ile Mycoplasma Agar Base (M ağar), U. urealyticum için U broth ve U agar kullanılmıştır. Mycofast' in, konvansiyonel yönteme göre M. hominis izolasyonu yönünden hem duyarlılık hem de özgüllüğü % 93, U. urealyticum izolasyonu yönünden ise duyarlılığı % 87, özgüllüğü % 95 olarak saptanmıştır, izolasyon süreleri açısından değerlendirildiğinde; konvansiyonel yöntemle M. hominis için 4 gün, U. urealyticum için 3.8 gün olan ortalama sürenin, Mycofast kit sistemi için 1.5 gün olduğu saptanmıştır. Konvansiyonel yöntemle yapılan çalışmada maliyetin, Mycofast kit sistemine oranla yaklaşık altı kat daha ucuz (sırasıyla test başına 2.4 $ ve 13.7 $) olduğu belirlenmiştir. Sonuçta, her iki yöntemden hangisinin seçileceğine, her laboratuvarın olanakları, iş yoğunluğu, bu konuda deneyimli personelinin bulunup bulunmaması, ayrıca maliyet analizi gibi değişkenler göz önüne alınarak karar verilmesinin en doğru yaklaşım olacağı düşünülmüştür.

Abstract

Conventional methods and Mycofast commercial test kit for detection of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum in cervical specimens were compared in points of detection time, efficacy and cost. Conventional media used were M broth and M agar for detection of M. hominis. U broth and U agar for detection of U. urealyticum. I Commercial kit used was Mycofast (International Mycoplasma, Signes, France). Both sensitivity and specifity of I Mycofast were 93 % compared with the conventional method for detection of M. hominis. while sensitivity and specifity for detection of U. urealticum were 87 % and 95 %, respectively. Mean detection time for M. hominis and ü ' urealyticum was four days and 3.8 days, respectively, with conventional method and 1.5 days with Mycofast. In this study, cost of conventional method was found to be six times less than that of Mycofast kit system (US $2.4 and US $ 13.7 per test, respectively). In conclusion, it is the best approach for laboratories to determine which method is to be employed considering variables such as workload, personnel and cost.
