AHMED CEVDET PAŞA VE MODERNİZM’E BAKIŞI*

Özet

“Osmanlı Devleti’nin en uzun yüzyılı” olarak adlandırılan 19. yüzyıl, bizlere kıymetli şahıslar ve eserler kazandırmıştır. Bunlardan en önemlisi şüphesiz yaşadığı döneme iz bırakmış olan Ahmed Cevdet Paşa’dır. Devlet kademelerinde birçok makamda bulunmuş ve bununla beraber çağındaki olayları kalemiyle geleceğe aktarmıştır. Miras bıraktığı eserleri ve bürokrasiden akademiye ve idareciliğe birçok alanda gösterdiği başarılar ile Cevdet Paşa; Osmanlı tarihinde önemli bir yere sahiptir. 18. yüzyıl sonu, 19. yüzyıl başındaki çalışmalarında; 19. yüzyılın Osmanlı’sını; idari, askeri, ekonomik, siyasi ve sosyal yapısını müesseseler bazında irdelemiştir. Almış olduğu eğitimler ve yürüttüğü görevler; kendisinin bir hukukçu, devlet adamı ve tarihçi olarak anılmasına vesile olmuştur. Cevdet Paşa’nın şahitlik ettiği Tanzimat dönemi, dünya tarihinin ve özellikle Osmanlı Devleti’nin değişiminde kırılma olarak değerlendirilebilir. Bu yüzyılda yaşanan değişimin doğrusu, yanlışı ve gerekliliği Paşa’nın birçok eserinde konu edilmiştir. Tarih sahnesinde tüm bu dinamikleri nasıl okumamız gerektiğini yazılarında tartışan Cevdet Paşa; günümüzde de süregelen modernizm kavramı sorununa ışık tutmaktadır. Tanzimat dönemi içinde medresede yetişen Cevdet Paşa’nın çağdaşlarından farklılık gösterdiği nokta şüphe yok ki modernizm ve değişime karşı takındığı tutumdur. Kadim geleneğin savunucusu bir Osmanlıcı ve İslamcı olan Cevdet Paşa’nın gözünden 19. yüzyıl modernizmi, çalışmanın temel konusunu teşkil etmektedir.

Abstract

The nineteenth century, called the longest century of the Ottoman Empire, brought us valuable people and works. The most important of these is Ahmed Cevdet Pasha, left his mark in the period in which he lived. He held many positions in the state authority and transferred the events of his age to the future with his pen. Cevdet Pasha, with his works left and his successes in many fields from bureaucracy to academia and administration, in his works in the late 18th century and early 19th century, examined the 19th century Ottoman Empire in the field of administration, military, economy, politics and social structure on the basis of administration. The trainings he received and duties he carried out brought about being remembered as a lawyer, teacher, statesman and historian. The Tanzimat period that Cevdet Pasha witnessed can be regarded as a breaking in the change of world history and especially of the Ottoman Empire. The truth, wrong and necessity of the change experienced in this century have been mentioned in many of Pasha's works. Cevdet Pasha, discussing how we should read all these dynamics in his writings in the history scene, sheds light on today’s ongoing problem of modernism. The point that Cevdet Pasha, who grew up in the madrasah during the Tanzimat period, differs from his contemporaries is undoubtedly his attitude towards modernism and change. 19th century modernism from the perspective of Cevdet Pasha, an Ottomanist and Islamist defender of the ancient tradition, is the main subject of the study.
