Abstract

Scholarly attention to the historical settlement of Vize, today a sub provincial capital in the provin- ce of Kırklareli, began with epigraphical documentations and narrative descriptions of the site by Greeks from the first half of the 19th century. The Thracian legacy of the settlement, which was already mentioned in ancient sources, and the Roman and the Christian past were revealed by these inscriptions and the Greek accounts of the monuments. Although these early studies were far from being accurate and scientific documentations, they did describe different settlements of the histo- rical periods, significant locations and monuments. The first archaeological excavations supervised by Mansel at the end of 1930s revealed crucial evidence for the Thracian settlement. Additional excavations of the 20th century on and around the acropolis of Vize led to important findings, but were poorly published. The Roman settlement of Çömlektepe with the theater on the south slope, the Late Antique/Byzantine fortifications around the acropolis hill with the citadel Hisartepe on the top, and the cross-domed church of Hagia Sophia of the 9th/10th centuries all provide evidence for a significant continuous settlement on the site. The Vize Survey Project 2011/2012 aimed at the extensive documentation of the fortifications and the other monuments to produce a digital topog- raphical plan of Vize. This article presents a part of this project, focusing on the connection between the research history and the topography of the site.
