Abstract

Pottery production reflects the techniques developed over the generations and a series of social and historical changes in material culture. The emergence of pottery in Southwest Asia is a subject that has been constantly updated with the data obtained from more than a hundred years of research in the Levant, Mesopotamia, Anatolia and Zagros and has been repeatedly discussed within the framework of different approaches over time. Whether or not the pottery originated in this region, it is a technological innovation for the Neolithic Age. In this context, it is necessary to constitute a theoretical framework to consider the emergence of pottery with its social, individual and historical dimensions and evaluate an object related to different social phenomena and production processes such as pottery. In southwestern Asia, pottery appeared technologically advanced form in several sites in Upper Mesopotamia between the end of the 8th and the beginning of the 7th millennium BC. The pottery in question consists of mineral tempered deep and shallow vessels with mostly dark coloured and well-burnished surfaces, closed-form, close to the rim, and horizontal blunt handles. This article examines the beginning of the pottery use in Southwest Asia in the context of technology theories and archaeological evidence.
