Abstract
The ancient city of Cremna, located within the borders of Burdur Province today, was one of the important cities of the Mountainous Pisidia Region in antiquity. While the three sides of the city are surrounded by steep and steep cliffs, the western side is protected by strong defensive structures. This is the only front of the city that is open to siege and attack. For this reason, it has been preserved with strong fortification walls built at right angles and extending north-south, and fifteen towers built closely in connection with these walls. This front of the city is separated from the plains of the Boğadic mountain just to its west by the small-scale Cremna Valley, which has the same extension as the defense structures. The valley somewhat isolates the city’s open state of siege. Because the wide flat areas here are both very close to the city and form an important headquarters area for the military units coming to besiege the city. In 278 AD, the city was occupied by Lydius of Isauria, whose anti-Roman policies were known. Thereupon, the imperial forces surrounded the city by establishing a headquarters on the plains of the Boğadiç Mountain, opposite the city. The city came under impe rial rule again in 279 AD. It has been determined that the Roman soldiers in the Siege of Cremna used the testudo formation, which is one of the popular war tactics applied in the siege events. This tactical use is explained on the basis of archaeological data such as the siege hill that the Roman soldiers created to besiege the city and the stones that were found to be thrown from the walls as ammunition on the besiegers. The aim here is to question the formation of the testudo war tactic in the city besieged by Rome. For this purpose, it is desired to state that the developments in the ancient war culture in Anatolia, especially in Cremna, should be handled from a different technical and tactical perspective.
