Abstract
It is generally accepted that during the Bronze Age, but particularly during Troy-II period, the city established important commercial ties with very distant centers and as a result made significant gains from the trade between the Aegean-Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea regions. It is accepted that its location close to the entrance of the Dardanelles Strait provided an important strategic advantage to Troy to control the trade between these two regions. One of the basic assumptions of this argument is that the Straits are waterways that enable the passage of merchant ships. In this article, it is discussed in the light of technological, geographical and hydrological data that a com- mercial transportation sea lane passing by the Straits was not possible throughout the Bronze Age.
