Abstract
The concept of history, which expresses what happened in the past, is also the name of the science that studies this human past. As a science, history has divided the past into periods or sections in order to examine the past facts more easily and to make these facts and events more understandable. Historians named a certain period of the past as the middle ages and developed different theses on the beginning and end of it. Some historians, despite many theses, describe the period between approximately 500 and 1500 A.D. as the middle ages. This thesis also contributes to understanding the middle ages. Civilization and development in the whole world are not the same in the medieval era of human history, as always. For example, this era is experienced differently at East/Islamic World from the West. In the same period of time, civilizations seem to live a different period. For this reason, it is possible to talk about the East and the West of the middle ages. We see that there are two civilizations, as at East and West in the Middle Ages: One is the Western/Christian civilization; the other is the Middle East/Islamic civilization. We can also express them as the East and West of the Middle Ages. While philosophy, science, and different thoughts were suppressed in the West of the Middle Ages, they were paved in the East. While in the West of the Middle Ages, philosophical and scientific studies were prosecuted and even could have resulted in death, they were supported in the East. In this study, some philosophical, scientific, and cultural differences in the East and West of the Middle Ages are examined.
