Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the experiences of social studies teachers with regard to the emergency remote education during the COVID-19 period and their predictions about the new normal. The phenomenological research design, one of qualitative research approaches, was used in the study. Data were collected through a semi- structured interview form applied to seven participants. As a result of the study, it has been determined that teachers carried out their teaching activities mostly using telephone and computer technologies in the emergency remote education process. In addition, it was found they faced the problem of l ow student participation in live lessons. It was also revealed that they were not able to assess student learning effectively in emergency remote education. The teachers stated that in the new normal, students will lack cognitive entry behaviors in some learning areas and would be willing/unwilling to participate in online teaching activities in the new normal. Finally, they said that they would use Zoom and EBA applications as well as the blended learning to supporting teaching.
