Abstract

The sermons are one of the common religious education activities and have had an important place in conveying the religious message to the masses in every period of history. Through these activities, the most essential information about religion was explained in simplicity and clarity that the public could understand, and religious feelings and thoughts were made a means of coalescing society. With the establishment of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, the sermons began to be prepared from a single source and their contents were organized by the needs and understanding of the period. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, it has been started to be discussed whether the language of this service, which has been continuing throughout the history of Islam, should be Turkish or Arabic. After the proclamation of the Republic, the discussions flared up, and ultimately, it was made obligatory by the decision of the parliament to read the sermons in Turkish so that the people could understand and benefit better. During this period, Üryanizade, who served as the member of the Presidency of Religious Affairs Committee (the highest advisory and decision-making body of the Presidency), wrote his work “Turkish Sermons” consisting of 40 sermons, which set an example for the order and system to be written after him. In the work, religious contents that tend to channel the people of the period were presented to the public under the headings of worship, social events, faith, people, religious days and nights, morality, education, halal and harams. In this article, the historical course of the sermon from Muhammad (pbuh) to the Republic was explained by scanning the literature; subsequently, discussions on Turkish sermons in this period were discussed in detail. The biography of Üryanizade was created with the archive scanning method and information was given about his life and the content of his work titled Turkish Sermons was analyzed. As a result, it was aimed to bring both Üryanizade and his related work to the attention of the world of science.
