Abstract

Aim: Meconium peritonitis is a rare condition with a fairly poor prognosis when diagnosed late. Our aim here is to present the etiology, clinical presentation and prognosis of infants with meconium peritonitis. Material and Method: We recorded the gender, birth weight, gestational age, accompanying diseases, the location of perforation, type of procedure performed during surgery, clinical condition and prognosis of cases with meconium peritonitis. Results: Of the 6 patients 4 were male, 2 were female, mean values of birth weight, gestational ages were 2796 g and 38 weeks respectively. Etiologically two had cystic fibrosis, one had jejunal atresia and one had ileal atresia. One of the premature patients died and the mortality rate was 16.6%. Conclusions: Meconium peritonitis is a rare condition. Cystic fibrosis is one of the must important diseases in its etiology. The prognosis of meconium peritonitis gets better if it's diagnosed early and treated surgically.
