Abstract
Purpose: To compare the types and prevalence of the peripheric retinal lesions in patients with and without posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). Methods: 130 eyes of 111 patients (mean age: 61.5±8.6 years) with PVD (Group 1) and 140 eyes of 93 patients (mean age: 59.9$pm$7.6 years) without PVD (Group 2) were examined with Goldmann triple-mirror contact lens to detect the peripheral retinal lesions. Results: The most common peripheral retinal lesions in patients with PVD were pavingstone degeneration (20%), pigment clumping (17.6%), microcystic degeneration (16.9%) and peripheral tapetochoroidal degeneration (15.3%), respectively. Retinal breaks were found in 13 eyes (10%) (in 2 eyes with shallow retinal detachment and in 3 eyes with bullous superior retinal detachment). The most common peripheral retinal lesions in group 2 were microcystic degeneration (20%), pavingstone degeneration (16.4%), peripheral tapetochoroidal degeneration (15%) and pigment clumping (12.8%), respectively. Retinal breaks without RD were found in 4 eyes (2.8%). The prevalence of the retinal tears in group 1 was found statistically higher than group 2 (p
