Özet
Amaç: Aydın ili ilköğretim okullarında görme bozukluğu ve refraksiyon kusuru prevalansını belirlemek ve bunun öğrencilerin ders başarısı üzerine etkisini değerlendirmektir. Yöntem: Aydın İli'nde toplam 8 okul içerisinden 626 öğrenci çalışmaya dahil edildi. Çalışma grubu çok aşamalı örnekleme yöntemi kullanılarak seçildi. Okuldaki muayeneleri sırasında her öğrencinin halihazırdaki görme keskinlikleri belirlendi.
Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of decreased visual acuity, and its effect on the students' academic performance in the primary schools of the Aydın City, and the affect of this prevalence. Material and Method: 626 students were included in the study among the 8 primary schools of the Aydın City. The study group was chosen by using the multistage sampling method. During the examinations, every students' visual acuities were determined as well as cover test and ocular motility evaluations. Students' academic performances were determined by their class teachers. The place of the students' seats in their classroom and the distance of the seat's from the front edge to the blackboard were determined. Results: The prevalence of the refraction problem and the uncorrected refraction problem were 8.5% and 5.3% respectively. The prevalence of the amblyopia was 1.8%. When the visual function was evaluated as the sum of the visual acuities of the two eyes, no statistically signifi-cant difference was found between the visual function and the academic success rates of the students. When the students whose visual acuity was 20/20 in at least one eye were considered, there was found again no statistically significant difference between the level of visual acuity and academic performance. When the students' academic success rates and the location of their seats' were evaluated, the ones who sit in the back seats (6.,7.,8. seats) were found to have lower academic success points. No statistically significant correlation was determined between the students' academic success rates and the distance between their seats and the black-board (r=-0.07, p=0.077). Conclusion: Uncorrected refraction problem was determined to be 5.3% among the stu-dents who were included in the study. This ratio shows the importance of the ophthalmologic examination in the school health studies, even though for this age group, it is too late to ascerta-in the amblyogenic factors. Although there was no relation between academic performance, visual function and the distance of the seats to the blackboard, the academic performance of students in back seats were found significantly reduced in this study. These findings suggested that class designs such as "U-sitting plan" and multiple group plan seem useful to increase the interest of students in the classroom.
