Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the result of multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) in the fellow eye of patients with unilateral central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Methods: mfERG recorded from both eyes of 10 patients with unilateral active CSC and 19 age-matched healty subjects. Pl amplitudes and implicit times were analyzed within five concentric ring annuli centered on the fovea. Local electroretinographic response amplitude and implicit times within the central 30° of the retina were compared with those of an age-matched control group. Results: All of the patients had central macular detachment in the affected eyes, while the fellow eyes were normal except for a few small retinal pigment epithelial abnormalities in 6 eyes. The mfERG was depressed in the affected eyes. Four of the clinically uninvolved eyes snowed reduced PI amplitudes and delayed PI implicit times. But, overally clinically uninvolved eyes showed mfERG amplitudes and implicit times within the normal range. Conclusions: We observed electroretinographic changes only in the clinically affected eyes of patients with CSC. Our findings do not support the conclusion that there is a functional impairment as measured by the mfERG, in the fellow eyes of such patients.
