Abstract

Using the noninvasive endovascular reversible cerebral ischemia model on 40 Sprague-Dawley rats, the neuroprotective effects of propofol, thiopental and etomidate on cortical and striatal infarcts were studied. Total infarct volume (cortical and subcortical) was significantly reduced in animals treated with propofol (20±8.8), thiopental (25±15) and etomidate (18±7.9) as compared to control group (71±6.9) (p< 0.005). Cortical infarct volume alone was also significantly reduced by propofol (5.2±4.7), thiopenthal (12±9.1) and ethomidate (7.2±4.9) as compared to control group (43±7.0) (p< 0.005). Thiopental (8.0±1.8) and etomidate (6.8±2.2) significantly decreased striatal infarct volume as compared to control group (16±2.0) (p< 0.05). In contrast, propofol (12±4.7) failed to significantly reduce striatal infarct size. In conclusion, propofol, thiopental and etomidate are equally effective in reducing cortical infarct volume in rats secondary to reversible middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. In contrast, propofol unlike thiopental or etomidate, appears to be ineffective at decreasing striatal infarct size.
