Abstract

Objective: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) contains a double-stranded circular DNA virus which belongs to the papillomaviridae family. It has been shown that it was found in 99.7% of cervical cancers. Different prevalence rates have been reported in studies conducted in our country and in different regions of the world. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence and the genotype distribution of HPV in our region. Material and Methods: In this study, HPV DNA positivity of cervical specimens of women who applied to the outpatient clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Cumhuriyet University Research and Application Hospital, between January 2015 and December 2017 were investigated. A total of 368 women aged between 14-83 years were included in this study. Reverse hybridization and PCR techniques were used. Data in our study were obtained retrospectively. Results: HPV DNA positivity was 28.8% (n = 106) in 368 samples included in this study. The most common genotype was high- risk HPV genotype 16 (23.5%). The HPV DNA positivity in women under 30 years of age was statistically significantly higher than women over 30 years (p = 0.009). Conclusion: In order to determine the HPV prevalence in our country accurately, there is a need for multi-centered studies with larger standardized patient and control groups.
