Abstract

Starting from the ancient times that we can follow, we witness many ceremonies and linguistic concepts developed on the basis of these ceremonies as an expression of "absolute loyalty" and "unchangeable trust" in the Turkish culture. One of these ceremonies is the oath or swearing ceremony in which "blood brotherhood" is declared. After the proclamation of blood brotherhood, the concept of "blood brother" has also rooted in the Turkish language. Two people who do not have blood ties come together in the presence of witnesses in order to both declare and implement absolute devotion and loyalty. After necessary preparations are made, these two people swear that they are each other's brothers and will be faithful to each other forever. During the oath, this bond is sealed with various rituals or practices. Since the seal of blood brotherhood is affixed with a vital element such as "blood", this oath can only be broken by death. The history of the "blood brotherhood" which is well known today in Anatolia and almost all modern Turks must date back to the proto-Turks. Studies on this subject attribute the origin of blood brotherhood to rituals based on bloodshed. In these ceremonies, the shed blood is drunk mutually or the bled body parts are combined to mix the blood. In this way, two foreign blood come together and "unity" occurs. However, it may not be correct to explain the concept of "blood brotherhood" by reducing it only to these ceremonies and to attribute the word "blood" to "blood shed" in these ceremonies. Perhaps the word "blood" in this concept has another explanation. It is necessary to consider this issue in more detail and to evaluate other possibilities, if any. In our study, first of all, the process of emergence of blood brotherhood as a cultural value has been revealed. Second, the word "blood" in the phrase "blood brother" is handled on the basis of the concept it corresponds to, and it is evaluated that this word may have evolved from another word meaning vital fluid in the human body. For this, the thesis is proposed that the blood in the phrase may have evolved over time from the word kaŋ "father" to the word blood "vital fluid".
