Abstract
In this study, we have investigated the role of low level carrier state and presence of HBV-DNA in a group of nonresponders to hepatitis B vaccination. Besides, nonresponder group has been compared with a control gro¬up that consisted ofresponders to HBV vaccination, about factors that are known to effect immunization such as cigarette smoking and obesity. Nonresponder group (n=41) was matched with the control group (n=3& by age and sex. According to our findings, the proportions of smokers and persons with body mass index higher than 25 in the nonresponder group were higher than the same proportions in the control group and statistical analysis gave tendency to significance. 41 persons in the nonresponder group were screened by polimerase chain reaction whether they were carriers of HBV-DNA or not and HBV-DNA was detected in a patient with no serologic markers of recent or past HBV infection,,'As a result, body weight and smoking were found to be asso¬ciated with nonresponsiveness to hepatitis B vaccination, low level carrier state and presence of HBV-DNA was not an important factor that contributes to nonresponsiveness.
