Abstract

This study was performed to determine serum interleukin 1-fi (IL-l[i) levels and to investigate its relationship with disease activity in patients with reactive arthritis. Thirty-one reactive arthritis patients and 21 healthy control subjects were enrolled into the study. Although serum IL-lfi levels were found to be higher in patient group when compared to those of control group, this difference was not statistically significant. Furthermore, serum IL-lfi levels showed no relationship with erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, which are markers of acute phase response. In conclusion, serum IL-lfi levels do not increase to establish the disease activity in patients with reactive arthritis. Therefore, serum IL-lfi levels are not useful to evaluate the disease activity in such cases.
