Abstract

This study was performed to obtain information about bone formation in postmenopausal period by determining serum osteocalcin and type-1 procollagĞn levels in both pre-ând postmenopausal women and to compare them with bone mineral density (BMD). Study group comprised 46postmenopausal and 35premenopausal wo¬men. In the postmenopausal women, we found that the levels of serum osteocalcin and type-1 procollagen were, 22.4±9- 74 ng/ml and 101.0+44.1 ng/ml, respectively, and BMD was 611.7±193- 7gr/ cm?. The same values in premenopausal women were as follows; 1735±4.9 ng/ml for serum osteocalcin, 94.4±24.7 ng/ml for type-1 procollagen, and 927.7±171.4 gr/cm? for BMD. As a result, we may conclude that serum osteocalcin and type-1 procollagen levels, biochemical markers of bone formation, are increased in postmenopausal women.
