Abstract

Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) causes changes in the haemostatic system partly by exposing blood to large foreign surfaces and materials in the extracorporeal circuits and partly due to the nonphysiological parame¬ters of the CPB. Development of heparin-coated CPB circuits is one of the improvements to create a biocompati-ble circuit surfaces and allowed to increase thromboresistance of the circuits. Efficiency of the heparin-coated surfaces was evaluated by comparing the post-operative bleeding, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet counts, pro-trombin time, activated partial thromboplastine time, fibrinogen level, fibrine degradation product, interna¬tional normalised ratio, D-dimer levels in this study and the results favoured the use of the heparin-coated sys¬tems
