Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of refractive errors and the frequency of color-blindness in school children between the ages of 6 andt 17 in the Osmangazi University research-training area. The study was carried out in all primary schools and secondary schools in 3 districts and 2 subdisdricts between October 1996 and June 1997. 5951 (96.56%) of the 6163 students enrolled in these schools were examined on refracti¬ve errors and color-blindness by using Snellen scale and Ishihara test cards. It was found that the refractive er¬rors increase with age in both boys and girls. No significant difference was found between girls and boys in me¬ans of refraction error. The proportion of individuals wearing glasses was higher in girls than boys and it was higher in the age group of 12-17 than 6-11 age group. Color-blindness was determined in 5.5% of boys and in . 0.8% of girls. The eye examinations should go beyond case studies and there should be oppurtunities in cure. It is emphasized the schools and families of color-blind children should be informed and that these children can be guided in the choice of their professions.
