Abstract

This study was conducted between September 1996-August 1998 in order to determine growth and parasites of crucian carps (Carassius carassius L., 1758) inhabiting the Karacaören I Dam Lake. The ages of and presence of parasites in a total of 274 fish were investigated. The age distribution of these fish was found to be between I-V and 18 (6.5%) of them were infected by the ectoparasite, Argulus foliaceus. Investigations of fish that were caught during the same month and were the same sex and the same age revealed that fish free of parasites were heavier and longer than those with parasites. It was determined that fish with parasites were both shorter and lighter, 4.4% and 7.7% respectively, than fish free of parasites.
