Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine depression, anxiety and stress levels, and toexamine the factors associated with these conditions among medical faculty students. Method: This cross-sectional study consisted of 1387 students studying at Mersin University, Faculty ofMedicine. The minimum sample size was calculated as 603 with 50% frequency, 95% confidenceinterval and ± 3 error margin.Total of 631 students participated in the study and 606questionnaires were evaluated. Data collection tools were: a questionnaire containingsociodemographic information of the students and Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale. In evaluatingthe data, Student T test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation test and linearregression analyses were used. Results: In total, 54.6% of the students were male and 32.3% wereliving in a dormitory. The mean age was 21.9±2.4. The mean depression score of the participantswas 13.5±9.3, anxiety score of 10.2±6.8, and stress score of 16.7±8.1. The prevalence of severe orextremely severe depression, anxiety and stress were 22.2%, 22.1% and 15.5%, respectively. Bothdepression, anxiety and stress scores were significantly higher among students who had themiddle/bad health status and bad relationship with family. Both depression and anxiety scoreswere high in those who did not have physical activity and poor school performance, and bothanxiety and stress scores were high in those who had chronic illness. Depression scores were highin those who choose the school unintentionally, anxiety scores were higher in those who did notrepeat a grade and stress scores were higher among women, those whose mothers wereemployed, and those with economic difficulties. Conclusions: It was seen that approximately onein five students experienced significant levels of depression, anxiety and stress. During theireducation, students should be consulted about their physical health conditions, family relationsand academic achievements which affect their mental status, and guidance services should begiven to students with problems.
