Abstract

Investigations on some biological characteristics and population fluctuation of Ceroplastes rusci L. (Homoptera: Coccidae) harmful to fig trees in Aydın province This study was carried out from 1999 to 2001 in Aydın province, and aimed to find out the fluctuation of population and some biological characteristics of Ceroplastes rusci L. on fig trees. Leaf and shoot samples were collected periodically every 15 days between May and October, once a month between November and April from İncirliova (Erbeyli village) and Buharkent districts. All biological stages, either alive or dead and parasitized individual of fig wax scale, were counted on the infested shoots or leaves. According to the results obtained, it was determined that C. rusci overwintered as 2nd, 3th instar nymphs, young female and mature female stages on shoots of fig trees in Aydın province. They have two generations per year. It was determined that one female laids average 750 ± 10.4 (450-2023) eggs. Also males of C. rusci were obtained at low density on the leaves of fig trees. It was determined that C. riisci prefered upside of leaves more than underside. The mobile nymphs of C. rusci, which were the most susceptible stage to insecticides, were found in orchard at first generation in June and at second generation in August. Parasitoids were obtained from the individuals of pest in the culture cages where parasitized individuals of C. rusci was placed and predators were obtained by stroking thebranches of the trees. According to the results, the predators of C. rusci were as follows Chilocorus bipustulatus (L.), Scymnus subvillosus (Goeze), S. rubromaculatus (Goeze), Synharmonia conglobata (L.) and Eublemma scitula (Rambur) and the parasitoids of C. rusci were as follows Tetrastichus ceroplaste (Girault), Metaphicus dispar (Mercet), Coccophagus Iycimnia (Walker), Scutellista cyanea (Motschulsky) and Pachyneuron concolor Förster and hyperparasitoid T. ceroplastephilus (Domenichini). The parasitisation rate was found in İncirliova higher than in Buharkent district. The highest parasitisation rate was obtained from the females and followed by 3th and 2nd instar nymphs, laid egg females, and 1st instar nymphs respectively.
