Abstract
Thrips (Thysanoptera) species and thrips damage associated with strawberry crops was investigated in Adana and Mersin provinces, Turkey in 2007-2008. Routine samplings of thrips infesting strawberry were done by collecting of flowers and storing them into the large plastic tubes (50 ml) containing 60 % ethyl alcohol. The population densities of the thrips and damage symptoms due to thrips attacks on various plant parts (i.e. flower, green and red fruits) were assessed by inspecting randomly selected total 25 samples of each plant parts in the each sampling period. In this study, a total of 24238 adult thrips were extracted from total 1422 flower samples. A total of 14 thrips species belonging three families of order Thysanoptera: Thripidae (6), Aeolothripidae (4) and Phlaeothripidae (4) were determined. Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) was the dominant thrips species accounting for 96.65 % of the total individuals sampled and it was followed by the Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom) (2.14 %) and Thrips tabaci Lindeman (1.00 %). Vast majority of adult and larval thrips were collected from the flowers. The high numbers of larval thrips were found on the ripe fruits in the end of May. It was observed presence of the dense necrotic spots on the various parts of flowers, after mean numbers with over 10 thrips per flower occurred on the most sampling dates of May. Furthermore mean numbers of 2-3 thrips (mainly thrips larvae) per fruits (ripe or unripe fruits) caused light silvery spots under and around calyx. No damage of bronzing and deformations on the fruits was detected. It is suggested that it is not necessary to use pesticides against pestiferous thrips until May, depending on the favorable climatic conditions (high temperature and relative humidity) for the thrips development and reproduce in the region. However effect of thrips on strawberry yield should be further investigated in the region.
