Abstract

Postpositions, which do not have a meaning on their own but gain ameaning by virtue of the place they occupy in the sentence, areusually used together with verbal nouns in Turkish. They follownouns and assume the task of linking them to a verb or anotherelement in the sentence. However, there are some exceptions. Thepostposition Diye comes, apart from these verbal nouns, afterconjugated verbs and fulfils the task of linking reported sentences tothe main verb. On the other hand, the postposition Gibi is thought tocome after participles. However, in this study, an example ispresented to show that postpositions can come after conjugated verbsapart from verbal nouns. This study provides views about the originsof the postposition için and recounts generally agreed-uponinformation about its use from historical dialects to Turkish ofTurkey. Apart from these, from the Karahanlı Turkish to modernTurkey Turkish the use of the postposition with the third personimperative form was identified and assessed for the first time in thisstudy. The reasons for this form of use were discussed and the aspectof the imperative that sharpens and emphasizes expression wasstressed.
